Dear SAIC Community,

As you may be aware, Chicago will host the 2012 G8 Summit and the annual summit of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) the week of May 15-22, 2012. This coincides with our scheduled 2012 Commencement date of May 19.After weighing a number of options, the senior administration of SAIC has determined that the best course of action to ensure the safety of our community and accommodate families traveling to Chicago for Commencement is to reschedule our Commencement ceremony and related activities for Sunday, May 13 , prior to the G8 and NATO summits. This decision emerged from close consultation with other downtown institutions particularly other universities and colleges, and discussions with the Chicago Police Department.During the week of May 15-22, travel will be impeded, hotel rooms will be unavailable, and security will be tight. Many heads of state and their security details will be based in hotels in the blocks surrounding our campus, and more than 150 groups have already begun organizing demonstrations expected to draw tens of thousands of protestors to the area. The safety of our students, faculty, staff, and families is paramount. We have determined that this schedule change is the best way to ensure that our Commencement Ceremony is accessible, safe, and enjoyable for all.
